The tree was planted from a cutting of the Bodhi Tree under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment at Buddha Gaya in India. It was brought to Sri Lanka by Theri Sangamitta, daughter of Emperor Asoka, and planted in 249 BC by King Devanampiyatissa. It is the oldest surviving historical tree in the world. |
