Sri Chinmoy offers a special meditation at the Sacred Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi Tree at Mahamegha Vana Park in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. The tree was planted from a cutting of the Bodhi Tree under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment at Buddha Gaya in India. It was brought to Sri Lanka by Theri Sangamitta, daughter of Emperor Asoka, and planted in 249 BC by King Devanampiyatissa. It is the oldest surviving historical tree in the world.

The event, attracts 2,000 spectators and athletes, and is organised by the 1992 Olympic decathlon champion, Robert Zmelik, in honor of Sri Chinmoy’s visit to Prague.

Sri Chinmoy competes in the Sri Chinmoy Cup — a special event organised by current Olympic decathlon champion, Robert Zmelik, in honor of Sri Chinmoy’s visit to Prague —held at Slavia Praha Sports Stadium in Prague, Czech Republic. His results in the field events are — 8.38 metres for the 4 kilogram shot put; 21.04 metres for the 1 kilogram discus; and 23.58 metres for the 600 gram javelin. He records a time of 16.60 seconds for the 100-metre race, which he runs with current Olympic decathlon champion Robert Zmelik. Emil Zatopek is the official starter for this special event.

Sri Chinmoy visits ‘Sacred Rock’ — home of Grammy-Award-winning musician Narada Michael Walden in Tiburon, California, USA — to dedicate the first Sri Chinmoy statue. He meditates with Narada privately and then meets with many of Narada's seeker-friends. During their private meditation, Sri Chinmoy offers Narada a special message. (The installation was commissioned by Narada and created by renowned British sculptor Kaivalya Torpy.)

Sri Chinmoy is guest of honour at the Iceland Sri Chinmoy Peace-Nation Inauguration Ceremony hosted by Reykjavik Mayor Ingibjörg Gísladóttir at Hofdi House (site of Presidents Gorbachev and Reagan 1986 Summit) in Reykjavik, Iceland. Former Prime Minister Steingrímur Hermannsson also lent his support to the occasion.

Sri Chinmoy offers a Peace Concert (600) at Reykjavik University Theatre in Reykjavik, Iceland. At the concert, Sri Chinmoy recites 40 poems on the theme ‘Here and Now’, later published in a book of the same name.

Sri Chinmoy meets with Dr. Aldaba-Lim, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and recently appointed Special Representative for the International Year of the Child, at a fund-raising bazaar held for UNICEF by the United Nations Meditation Group. Sri Chinmoy gives an impromptu flute performance and the UN singers also perform Sri Chinmoy’s new song ‘UNICEF’. The event is opened by Dr, Aldaba Lim.
