Hope

Hope

H. is our preparation. H. is our aspiration. H. prepares [us] for the unknown; aspiration for the Unknowable. Unknown is man’s ultimate achievement. Unknowable is God’s Eternal Now.

Hope is an inner effort to see something new, to feel something new, to say something new, to do something new, to learn something [new]. When I smile I see something new. When I cry I feel s. new. When I pray I say something [new]. When I meditate I do something new. When I surrender I become something new. My newness is my self-transcendence. My self-transcendence is God’s pride; God's pride and gratitude.

2. H. nourishes faith. Faith treasures hope. Hope dreams of God-beauty in God-Reality. Faith dreams of dreams of God-Reality and God-Beauty. H. pulls the heart of tomorrow into today’s body. Faith pushes today’s body into the heart of tomorrow. When Tomorrow’s heart enters into today’s body the earth-aspiration is crowned with success. When today’s body enters into tomorrow’s heart Heaven’s vision is crowned with success. Earth-success is the victory of God’s Compassion-Will. Heav.-success is the victory of God’s aspiration-will.

3. To hope is to see with the eye of the heart. To hope is to make the heart captain of the mind, vital and heart.

To hope is to send darkness-life into exile. To hope is to feed the inner sun to give birth to the outer sun. The inner sun is, the outer sun becomes. The inner sun is the silence-height of God. The outer sun is the sound-length of God.

4. My h. [hope] is my humility's light and my h. [humility's] light is my divinity’s birthright. My d. [divine] birthright is God’s Eternity’s height, Infinity’s delight and Immortality’s life.

5. Humanity is forced humility. D. [Divinity] is spontaneous beauty.

Humility is God’s satisfaction-beauty in man. Humility is man’s perfection-necessity in God.

Death

— Death —

What is death? The eternal pilgrim’s short rest. What is death? A necessary experience of the finite at the present stage of evolution. What is death? A shattering blow aimed at the desiring man and an awakening hand for the aspiring seeker.

2. There are two types of desiring men. One type thinks death is evil because death does not allow them to fulfil their teeming desires on earth. Another type thinks that the fruits of their desire are very painful. The more they desire the more they will suffer. The more they stay on earth the more they will desire. When the desires are fulfilled

they are unhappy. When the desires are not fulfilled they are unhappy. And as long as they stay on earth, they will be compelled to remain unhappy. Therefore they want to embrace death.

There are two types of aspiring men. One type feels that death must be conquered so that they can manifest the kingdom of heaven on earth. And that the human life must be divinely transformed into the divine life and flooded with divine light! The other type feels it is not the human body that has to be transformed but the earth-bound human consciousness that has to be transformed

into the heaven-free consciousness. In order to do that one has to stay on earth indefinitely for a long time.

                  (?) - - (Bengali word)
It is the divine con. that will transform earth-reality and manifest divinity and Immortality.

2. He who does not aspire . . . Aspi is new life. Aspiration . . .

3. To an unaspiring man, death is destruction. To an aspir. man, death is a mystery. To a greatly advanced seeker, death is a short rest. To a God-realised yogi,

[death is] an instrument of God. This instrument consciously frightens the unaspiring men and unconsciously inspiring men. To expedite its spiritual journey so that then before the arrival it achieves something quite significant for the mother earth.

4. The unaspiring people never live. Their constant fear of death never allows them to live. The aspiring man never dies for his inner life has consciously established an inner connection with the Eternal Life.

Every moment divinely used is a powerful contribution to life and an added life. Every moment undivinely used or wasted is a powerful contr. to and (?) stretching span of death. Death knocks at our door when we try to make friends with the discouraging disappointing and unfulfilled past. Life makes friends with us when we consc. try to bring down the golden future into the immediacy of today and in the core of the Eternal Now.

Earth-life is preparation. Death-arrival is relaxation. Heaven-life is aspiration. God-love is realisation. Man-perfection is God-satisfaction. God-satisfaction is the beginnging of his silence-life and the (?) of his sound-life.

Note:

The above draft formed the basis of Sri Chinmoy’s lecture, entitled ‘Death’, which he delivered at the University of Newcastle in England on 27 June 1974. The lecture was subsequently published in My Rose Petals, Part 3, by Agni Press in 1974.

Conscience

1. Conscience is the inner voice, the voice of light. This voice tells us to say the right thing, to do the right [thing] and become the right thing. What is the right thing to say? God is for all. What is the right thing to do? To love God in every human being. What is the right thing to become? To become a cheerfully and devotedly unconditional instrument of God.

2. When we say the right thing, God smiles at us. When we do the right thing, God blesses us. When [we] become the right thing, God embraces us.

3. Conscience warns us: not to go back to the animal life. Conscience asks us to lead the real human life, the life of morality, and then c. inspires us to listen constantly only to the dictates of the Inner Pilot. Animal life is destruction. Human life is frustration. Divine life [is] dedication. There was a time when we lived the life of destruction. Now we are living the life of frustration and in the future we hope to lead the life of dedication. Dedication is the secret art of giving what we have and what we are.

What we have is an inner cry to realise the absolute supreme. What are we? We are the chosen inst. [instruments] to manifest God on earth.

4. A life of con. is a life of divine confidence. A life of confidence is a life of perfect a life of earth-perfection. A life of earth-perfection is a life of God-satisfaction. For us God-satisfaction is the only thing that the aspiring man in us needs. Pleasure satisfaction is the only thing that the desiring man in us needs.

The desiring man wants to devour the whole world. But before he devours he is compelled to starve by the cosmic forces and then death comes [and] devours him. The aspiring man wants to love the world, serve the world. Before he loves the world, he realises that the world has already started loving him soulfully. Before he serves the world, he sees that the world has already started serving him devotedly.

5. C. is creative and conscious evolution. Who is evolving? God the ascending man. Who is descending? God the loving Saviour and illumining Liberator.

When we are in the process of creative evolution, we come to realise our discovery of God is eternally old and our invention of God is eternally new. When we are in the process of conscious evolution, we see no one but God within us and nothing but God-Light without us. The difference between God and God-Light is this God becomes and God-Light is. To each seeker God becomes a diff[erent] person and different reality according to his power of receptivity. But to each [seeker] God-Light or (?) God is the same – Love-flood and Compassion-flood.

6. When c. is our guide, we do not make a mistake. When we do not make any mistake, we do not become a victim to despair. A life without despair means a life of achievement and fulfilment. Here the seeker

the seeker does not live in the dreamland. He lives in the reality-country. Here his heaven hope-hunger is sumptuously fed. Here his earthly dream-boat has reached the heavenly reality-shore. Here his aspiration-kite flies in the realisation-sky. Earth-life is nothing but compromise. In the festival of compro[mise] conscience is never to be found. Conscience feels it is imperative that one has to accept God-light and Truth totally and unconditionally. If one is for both God and ignorance, then he is a fool. Neither God nor ignorance can nor will claim or even accept him on their own. If one wants to remain neutral, that means inwardly

he has chosen one side. Owing to (?) fear and difficulty one does not dare to declare his feeling, (?) and his support. But we must know that conscience is for spiritual people, people who consciously and constantly need God. Therefore when c. plays its role one has to be a hero-warrior, he has to work dynamically and heroically without paying any attention to the results of his endeavour. Who cries for the success-result from our action. The beggar in us. Who cries for the progress-result from our action. The seeker in us. Who cries for the cheerful surrender-result from [our action]. The divine Lover in us.

Who is the divine Lover in us. God. Who is the divine beloved in us? God. God the Lover flies from the finite into infinite into the Infinite to see the (?) of unity – and God the Beloved [flies] from the Infinite into the finite. . .

Is spirituality an art?

Is spirituality an art?

Spirituality is not only an art but a divine, illumining and fulfilling art. The human artist expresses his personality, his indiv [individuality] through his art. In a sense he expresses himself through his art. The divine artist expresses God the Beauty, God the Divinity and God the reality through his art. To a human artist art is the expression of his desire-life. To a divine artist art is God-manifestation-aspiring life.

2. Hu. [Human] art either surrenders to fate or revolts ag [against] fate.

D. [Divine] Art accepts fate [and] transforms fate. D. art is inspired by and energised by God’s supernal vision and energised by his adamantine will.

3. Art is creation. Creation is art. In the divine art there is no forced physical effort, no vital effort, no mental effort. There is only [one] effort and that effort is called psychic effort. The body, the vital and the mind may co-operate with the psychic art. When they consciously co-operate the art reaches an acme of perfection [and] becomes perfect perfection.

4. Emerson: in art the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can inspire.

In the divine art, the heart can never execute anything higher than the soul can aspire. Of course there is a yawning gulf in the ordinary art [between the] heart-capacity of receptivity and the hand-capacity of expression. In the spiritual life the soul-capacity of assimilation and the heart-capacity of revelation perfectly complement each other.

5. In a human being the divine artist and the human artist play quite often hide and seek. When the human artist appears he wants to fascinate the world

with his artistic capacity. When God the artist appears He wants to (   ) illumine and nourish human consciousness and earth consciousness.

6. Both spiritual art and unspiritual art deal with beauty. In the unspiritual art beauty is the effect of a (   ). In the spiritual art beauty is. In the uns. [unspiritual] art beauty is a (   ) power. In the spiritual [art] beauty is an illumining power. The human in the artist feels beauty is skin-deep. (   ) beauty is not only soul-deep

but God-deep.

The soul-deep reality opens our heart to the ever-transcending Beyond. The God-deep reality reveals to us the ever-tr. beyond in the eternal Now.

Confidence

1

— Confidence —

1. What is confidence? Confidence is the combination of God-Compassion and self-reliance. Confidence is the expression and revelation of the divine will through the human heart, mind, vital and body. Confidence. Confidence is God-beauty in us. Confidence is truth-unity and truth-multiplicity in us. Confidence is life-acceptance, life-transcendence, earth-transformation and God-manifestation by us.

2. Confidence is not pride. Confidence is not hyperbole. Confidence is not the precursor of destruction. Confidence is the conscious awareness [of] one’s heights and depths. Confidence

is actually where we stand in the battlefield of life. Confidence is the harbinger of achievement, a plethora of achievements.

3. Confidence is the contentment of knowing what to enjoy, whom to enjoy, how to enjoy, when to enjoy, where to enjoy, why to enjoy. What to enjoy? God’s Smile. How to enjoy? Through self-giving. When to enjoy? When our body, vital, mind and heart are pure. Where to enjoy? In the depth of our devoted hearts. Why to enjoy? Precisely because God the Supreme Enjoyer wants us to enjoy like Him. Needless to say, we are talking about divine enjoyment and not about human enjoyment. What is the difference between human enjoyment and divine enjoyment? Human enjoyment is self-indulgence. Self-indulgence is vital pleasure

of the lower self. Divine enjoyment is the taste of divine ecstasy in the higher self. The lower self binds us, incarcerates us. The [higher self] liberates us, illumines and offers us the message of Infinity’s bliss, Eternity’s light and Immortality’s life.

4. Confidence can be developed like muscles with regular spiritual discipline. If you do not have confidence right now, do not be doomed to disappoint[ment]. Slowly, steadily and unerringly you can develop confidence by uniting your will consciously and soulfully with the will of the Supreme during your meditation.

5. We have two giant friends: confidence and faith.

Faith can and will read the silence-message of God. Confidence can read and hear the sound-message of God. With the help of the silence-message we can reach our Source, the Goal of all goals. With the help of the sound-message we divinely and soulfully perform our God-ordained task on earth, we supremely manifest God on earth.

6. Confidence is a superior and supernal form of belief. It lives in the soul-light of the heart. Confidence is not a mental belief. Mental beliefs can easily be battered and shattered by the tornado of undivine doubt and

suspicion forces. Confidence is the heart’s spontaneous claim of dynamic truth and light. Confidence is the hero-warrior in us to fight against teeming undivine and hostile forces in the battlefield of life and establish God’s light, God’s beauty, God’s perfection on earth so that today’s crying and bleeding earth can turn into smiling and dancing heaven for the liberated souls and the Cosmic Gods to perform their divine roles on earth.

7. Finally confidence is Truth-cognition in us, Heaven-vision with us and God-decision for us while marching along Eternity’s Road.

You or I?

by Sri Chinmoy
Dag Hammarskjöld Lecture Series
Dag Hammarskjöld Auditorium, United Nations, New York

O God, are You responsible for all the suffering, darkness and ignorance in the world, or am I?

“Son, I am responsible. I am responsible for everything; I am responsible for everyone; I am responsible for My entire creation. It is I who reside in everything as inspiration and as aspiration. It is I who approve of everything or tolerate everything, show compassion for everything or forgive everything. Therefore it is I who am responsible for everything, whether it is good or bad, divine or undivine. It is I who am responsible in everything, in every action, in every human life.”

O God, You want to change the face of the world. Do You want to do it alone, all by Yourself, or do You need my help and dedicated service?

“Son, I do not want to change the face of the world all by Myself. I cannot change the face of the world alone. I need your assistance. I am the tree. You, all human beings, are the leaves, flowers and fruits. A tree without leaves, flowers and fruits is worthless. I need assistance from my created human beings. I am the ultimate realisation of your climbing cry. You are the ultimate manifestation of My descending Dream. The transformation of the earth-consciousness can take place only when you and I work together. Dedicated service from both the Creator and the creation is needed to change the face of the world.”

AUM

“You or I?”

When I think of the divine within my heart, when I meditate on the divine within my heart, I see, I feel my “I”. This “I” is not a self-centred “I”. This “I” is the infinite expansion of my universal oneness.

When I think of the undivine within my being, when I meditate on the undivine within my being, I automatically choose the life of bondage. I become the life of frustration. I become the life of destruction. When I meditate on the undivine or think of the undivine, I choose mental limitation to be my own. I choose vital frustration to accept me as its own. I choose physical imperfection and unconsciousness to take me as their very own. Each moment that I meditate on the undivine, I enjoy, consciously enjoy, despair, frustration, limitation, bondage and death.

Here at the United Nations let us say “You and I”, not “You or I?”

You and I. You as a nation — aspiring nation, searching nation, crying nation, illumining nation — can fulfil the Dream of God on earth. As a seeker of the Highest Truth, with your dedication you can fulfil the Dream of God.

When, as a nation, you think only of yourself, I see you as a petal of a rose. But when, on the strength of your dedication to the world at large, you need the Divine in you to think of you and to meditate on you, I see you as a whole, a rose complete. I do not see you as a petal, but as a fully-blossomed rose.

“You or I?” is determined by our actions. The Divine within us gets abundant joy when we act devotedly and soulfully. The undivine in us gets joy when we want to possess and be possessed. We know the secret of joy. When we do the right thing, on the strength of our inner cry, we get joy. But the supreme Joy will not be, cannot be our joy unless and until we know how to devote ourselves. The result of our actions may be satisfactory to us, but if we do not get this result by virtue of our devoted and selfless service, we will not get infinite Joy and supreme Joy.

Our dynamic joy constantly pleases God.
Our inner silence constantly feeds God.
Our total and integral surrender devours God.

Each action of ours affects the world at large. A state of mind can affect the entire being. An individual can affect the entire humanity. An iota of God’s Concern can illumine all of mankind.

Joy is in self-transcendence.
Joy is in self-offering.
Joy is in self-fulfilment.

Each individual knows that when he was in the animal world he got joy in struggling and fighting. Now he knows that in the human world he gets joy, real joy, abiding joy, in serving and in self-giving. He knows that in the future, in his life divine, he will get joy only in becoming what he is in his transcendental Self: all the Light, the Wisdom, the Perfection of the Supreme.

“You or I?” Each individual, when he separates a portion of himself from his entire existence, feels his you-consciousness. When an individual uses his hands, if he thinks that his hands are the only reality and not his feet, his head, or any other part of himself, then he will hear the song of “you”. But while using his hands, if he thinks that this is the time when he has to use his hands but there will be many occasions when he has to use his legs and other parts of his body, and that therefore all his limbs and organs are important, then there can be no “you”. It is all “I”.

When we meditate on the Absolute Supreme within us, we see how clearly, how fruitfully, both “you” and “I” can work together. We use our legs to go to the office, and then we use our hands to work in the office, and our head to think in the office. Everything has its own place. Everything has its own hour. Each individual has to abide by the inner hour and give due importance to each thing according to God’s Will.

God, when am I going to know that You and I are one, or that You and Your entire creation are one?

“The hour has already struck for you to know that I and My creation are one. If you separate Me from My creation and want to achieve joy or grow into joy, I will have no objection. But you will have only limited joy, limited achievement. If you unite both Me and My creation as one, your joy becomes infinite, your achievements become infinite.

“You or I?” cannot solve the age-long problem of humanity. This problem is the sea of ignorance within us and without. But “you and I” can solve this problem. When the unlit consciousness and the lit and illumined consciousness within ourselves become one, that is the end of “you or I”. We become all oneness, universal oneness: the song of universal oneness, the life of universal oneness and the breath of universal oneness.

O My Pilot Beloved

During the first three days of August 1978, Sri Chinmoy offers a number of prayers to his Pilot Beloved after meditations at various venues in New York. The prayers for 2 August are reproduced here.

Accomplishment and happiness

8:00 a.m.
Jamaica High School Track, Jamaica, NY

O my Pilot Beloved, do tell me the difference between accomplishment and happiness.

"My child, accomplishment is constant self-giving and happiness is God-becoming once and for all."

O my Pilot Beloved, what is the difference between self-giving and God-becoming?

"My child, self-giving is a fruitful smile and a soulful cry: Eternity's cry and Infinity's smile. In God-becoming, the divine lover says to the Beloved Pilot: 'Lord, at long last I have come to You to offer myself — soul, heart, mind, vital and body. All that I have and all that I am, I offer to you devotedly, unreservedly and unconditionally, plus constantly.' In reply, the Lord Beloved says: 'My child, indeed, from now on you can claim Me as your own, very own. On every plane of My Consciousness, in every world that I am in, in My entire Universe, you have the most secret, most sacred and most significant place. Here on earth, there in Heaven, you will eternally remain My unparalleled instrument, My eternally unprecedented Choice. In you, through you I shall reveal Myself and fulfil Myself. I shall satisfy My Vision-World and My Reality-World only in and through you, you alone. From now on, you will be the source of My unparalleled joy, My unparalleled success and My unparalleled progress in My own Eternity's growing and glowing Vision-Reality. In everything that I do and in everything that I say, your living breath shall shine brilliantly and perpetually.'"

I need you

12:45 p.m.
144th St. Gym, Jamaica, NY

O my Pilot Beloved, I wish to doubt. I wish to doubt my suspicion of others' capacities. I wish to doubt my suspicion of others' aspiration-height and dedication-length. Each time I doubt others, I blight their pure hearts. While blighting their pure hearts, I weaken my own very limited aspiration and dedication-capacity. Therefore, O my Pilot Beloved, I wish to doubt my suspicion of others and thus cancel and illumine my previous blunder.

O my Pilot Beloved, I wish to be afraid of my ignorance-tiger, which is right in front of me and about to devour me. Before it devours me, I wish to run towards You for Your immediate Protection. If I am not afraid of my ferocious ignorance-tiger, then I shall not run towards You for Your ever-compassionate Protection. Therefore, to start with, I wish to be afraid of my all-devouring ignorance-tiger. Your Protection and Compassion, I know, will not only save me but also will give me the capacity one day to destroy entirely the very existence of my ignorance-tiger.

My friends, my enemies

5:45 p.m.
144th St. Gym, Jamaica, NY

O my Pilot Beloved, my friends consciously help me realise You. My enemies unconsciously help me transform my unlit human nature. Would You please tell me if my friends are more important than my enemies, or if my enemies are more important than my friends?

"My child, no comparison! Unconscious help is not worth much. Unconscious help does not deserve any appreciation, let alone gratitude. But if help is conscious, then it deserves not only appreciation but also gratitude. Therefore, only offer your gratitude to your true friends, who consciously help you. But just because you do get help, even unconsciously, from your enemies, if you happen to see them as you walk along the path, you can offer them a soulful smile. You do not have to go out of your way to look for your friends, either, anywhere in My creation. Just offer them in silence your gratitude-heart.

"Again, there is only one real Friend, one eternal Friend, and that is I. It is from Me that everyone gets the things he needs to transcend his unlit animal nature and realise Me. It is I who help you to realise Me through your human friends. It is I who have been playing the role of friendship from time immemorial. Since you do not see Me, since you cannot comprehend Me in the physical, it is advisable to be constantly grateful to your so-called friends. It is your friends who are constantly helping you to realise Me. Realisation is oneness, eternal oneness, and in Me is your eternal oneness-life. He who helps you realise Me is your oneness-friend and My blessingful, fruitful chosen instrument."

The First 3100-Mile Race

concluded on August 1st in Jamaica, New York; the Awards Ceremony is held on August 2nd

The first annual Sri Chinmoy 3100 Mile Race (12 June-1 August) concludes outside Thomas Edison Vocational High School in Jamaica, NY, USA. The race was conducted on a certified .5488 mile loop (883.2079 meters) on a paved sidewalk surrounding the school. With a 51-day cut-off, only two out of the five starters, completed the 3,100 miles — Edward Kelley (1st man) in 47 days + 15:19:56, and Suprabha Beckjord (1st woman) in 50 days + 02:09:56. And, two others — Georgs Jermolajevs and Aleksandar Arsic — finished 2700 miles.

Sri Chinmoy’s Remarks at  the Awards Ceremony

at Aspiration-Ground, Jamaica Hills, New York

Dear runners,

I bow to your soul, I bow to your heart, I bow to your life, sleeplessly and unreservedly.

The number 31 has a very special significance in my life. I was born in 1931. According to my physical body and my vital, I am old. According to my mind, I am ancient. According to my heart, I am as young as ever. According to my soul, I am yet to be fully manifested. According to my Lord Beloved Supreme, I am living in His own Heart-Garden, and I shall forever do so. Finally, according to me, I am all gratitude to the climbing tears of Mother Earth and to the descending smiles of Father Heaven. I am one, inseparably one, eternally one with the climbing tears of Mother Earth and the descending smiles of Father Heaven.

Our philosophy is self-transcendence. Yes, there is no limit to our inner progress and outer success. But again, there comes a time when we reach a certain height, such an extraordinary height, that we feel we can live there for a good many years safely and self-givingly. Then we wait indefinitely for God's choice Hour to inspire us, to aspire in and through us to go forward, to embark on a new journey.

This 3,100 miles is an unprecedented journey in our world-peace-manifestation-dream. World-peace can come into existence only when we are inundated with patience and perseverance. Infinite patience we need in our inner life and perseverance we need in our outer life.

These 3,100 miles remind us of one divine and supreme reality: we can and we must do everything at our command to transform the world of lethargy and unwillingness to be dynamic. Unwillingness we do not leave behind us. Therefore happiness remains always a far cry. Willingness to give, willingness to achieve, willingness to grow and glow should be the message of our souls. With our souls' blessings we can and will fulfil our earthly life.

To Ed, Suprabha, George and Alexandar, my soul’s summit blessingful love, blessingful joy and blessingful pride I am offering unreservedly and unconditionally. Whenever I passed by you running, you reminded me of our souls' eternal, birthless and deathless journey and you reminded me of Eternity's choice runners.

Human pride is devoured and has to be devoured for the development of humility, which we all desperately need to make inner and outer spiritual progress. It is our spiritual progress which will make us God-champions in each and every field of life. Again, there is something called divine pride. This divine pride breathlessly whispers into our ears: "You are the choicest instrument of God. It is beneath your dignity to wallow in the pleasures of ignorance-night, to surrender to the wrong, undivine forces. God wants you to be an exact prototype of His Universal Manifestation and Transcendental Dream.” So this divine pride I have seen and felt in each of the four runners. I have seen and felt God's own Pride, founded upon His infinite Delight in each of you.
