Animesh Harrington

animeshThe unseen hand behind this website is Animesh Harrington. In 2008 Animesh had the glimmer of an inspiration to create an online home for all the articles, photographs and biographical details about his spiritual guide, Sri Chinmoy. It was a daunting task. Sri Chinmoy was a poet, a composer, a musician, an artist, an athlete, a world-traveller – and in every sphere he offered what can only be called a fountain-like abundance of creativity. Over the next sixteen years, Animesh patiently gathered documents and photographs from diverse sources, uploading them with his own refined sense of artistic design to this Reflections website. Gradually, it evolved into what it has become today – an unparalleled repository of information about Sri Chinmoy’s life not only for Sri Chinmoy’s disciples but for aspirants worldwide. This website represents a supreme act of devotion and dedication. And it is one which shall endure for years to come.

Happiness Does Exist on Earth

A story by Sri Chinmoy

Since my childhood ended, in my entire incarnation I have had only two or three happy moments. Of course, when I achieved God-realisation was one. And the day I rode with the engineer of the steam train in Australia was another. When I was young it was my greatest desire to be the driver of a train. God did not see fit to fulfil this innocent desire of mine, but now my Australian children have fulfilled it!

The engineer was so kind, so nice; he received so much. Every two minutes he was putting coal in the furnace, and talking, talking, talking, all about his experiences with this train and other trains. He has been in India, and he talked about the Darjeeling train, which is much more peculiar and dangerous than this one. This train is mainly for children and for tourists, and quite a few of the workers on it work for free. His real job is running a nursery, and driving the train is a labour of love. If everyone took a salary, they wouldn't be able to keep the train running.

Every year there is a race - the train versus runners. The runners start and finish at the same place as the train. But they run on the road, while the train goes on its track. The route is very hilly and very scenic. One year Kishore joined the race, and he was one of those who beat the train. But the driver told me, "We get joy by losing to the runners. Otherwise, could anybody defeat us?" The train can safely go about 22 miles per hour. If it goes much faster, it will go off the rails.

At one point the engineer asked me to sit on his seat, but it was so narrow! My thigh was larger than the seat. The sound the train made gave me such joy. And the whistle was so loud! He would pull the handle just half an inch, and such a loud noise it made!

So my Australia has given me tremendous joy by fulfilling an innocent childhood desire of mine.

Grand Central Station Sees Jharna-Kala

Thousands of New Yorkers and visitors to the populous Grand Central Station were treated to a visual phenomenon during the month of September at the Jharna-Kala Exhibit in the Vanderbilt Arcade. There, busy commuters could retreat from the hubbub of the daily rush and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the white gallery, which held an abundance of colourful and masterful C.K.G. originals — a true haven for a New Yorker's beauty-hungry eyes.

During a press conference at the exhibit on 16 September, C.K.G. told WPIX-TV Channel 11 News, “My paintings are my aspiration and my dedication. My paintings help me to aspire more devotedly and more soulfully. My paintings help me dedicate my body, vital, mind, heart and soul more devotedly to my Inner Pilot Supreme.”

An Oasis for Inner Peace Finds a Temporary Home in Grand Central

A place for contemplation, tranquillity and inner peace in the heart of Grand Central Terminal.

Well, for the rest of this month, anyway, or at least that is what the Indian mystic and yogi Sri Chinmoy hopes to offer with an art gallery showing 200 of his paintings on a lower concourse of the hectic terminal.

The gallery is the result of a happy trade-off between the guru and his spiritual followers, on the one hand, and Conrail, the Government-assisted rail corporation, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on the other.

The storefront in the Vanderbilt Arcade, running below Vanderbilt Avenue toward the Times Square-Grand Central subway shuttle terminus on the south-west side of the building, once housed a Savarin Restaurant, but for two and a half years it has stood empty, its whitewashed windows collecting grime.

Now a clear sweep of windows gives strollers a view of colorful abstract designs, in what is called the Jharna-Kala gallery. The words are Bangladeshi for “fountain art,” meaning that it “stems from the fount of creation,” according to the guru’s literature.

Sri Chinmoy’s disciples offered to clean up the eyesore in exchange for free use of the space to show his works. A spokesman for Conrail, on hand for a press reception yesterday, said the corporation was happy to be performing a public service. Its officials hope that the bright new looks of the place will help them attract a permanent, paying tenant. The agreement is good for the rest of this month.

“The Chinmoy people came looking for a place, and we thought it was better than having it just sitting here, collecting dust,” said Robert J, Tracy, real-estate manager for the rail corporation. A check of the group's references, including a letter from President Carter, proved quite impressive, he said.

After Sept. 30, Conrail will be looking for another tenant for the total  6,500 square feet of space — anybody who can pay the "negotiable" price, he said.

Sri Chinmoy, reposed in a blue reclining chair to receive the press, reflected, on request, on the contrast created by situating an intended oasis of spiritual reflection in a setting as bustling as Grand Central Terminal.

"I hope the daily travelers will have a moment of inspiration, to feel something new, illumining," he said, his hands folded in his lap.

"We embody two realities," he said." The outer and the inner. The outer reality is the hustle and bustle of life. The inner is poise, like the depths of the Pacific Ocean. The outer world must plunge, as a stone into the ocean, in order to bring to the fore the capacities of the inner world for peace, for serenity and tranquillity.”

The spiritual leader, who has reportedly written 300 books and who heads an organization with centers in 60 cities worldwide, serves as director of the United Nations Meditation Group.

A trickle of visitors and passers-by yesterday indicated that they thoroughly appreciated the temporary gallery, but they were mostly getting in out of the rain.

Oslo — now also a Peace Capital

What does Oslo have in common with Ottawa, Edinburgh, Reykjavik, Canberra or Wellington? They have all been appointed Peace Capitals.

On Tuesday Oslo was ceremoniously inaugurated as a Peace Capital. The founder of the Peace Run and leader of the Peace Meditation Group at the UN in New York, Sri Chinmoy, deputy mayor Svenn Kristiansen, representatives from the parliament, ski-Norge, and 60 invited guests from inland and abroad gathered in the Ski Museum in Holmenkollen, where a plaque marking Oslo as a Peace Capital was unveiled.

Chinmoy, who is most well-known for the initiative of a global peace run, said that Oslo with its peace-work will inspire millions of people around the world.

– The movement is concerned with good relations – not just between countries – but also between peoples. Especially children are taught that peace and reconciliation between people is important, says Ole-Johnny Johnsen, initiator in Norway who was involved in launching the Peace Run in Oslo in 1987. The Peace Run has been organised every other year in Oslo, most recently this summer when children from 57 primary schools participated.

Aurora-Flora

On September 15, 1980, Sri Chinmoy begins delivering a short inspiring talk each morning after sports practice at Jamaica High School track. He asks his disciples to concentrate on the message during the meditation that followed.

Inferiority, my inferiority!
Do you not realise that you are hurting my beautiful eyes?
How can I forgive you, and why should I?

Inferiority, my inferiority!
Do you not realise that you are killing my soulful heart?

How can I forgive you, and why should I?

Inferiority, my inferiority!
Do you not realise that you are disappointing my hopeful soul?
How can I forgive you, and why should I?

Inferiority, my inferiority!
Do you not realise that you are deserting my blessingful Supreme?
How can I forgive you, and why should I?

Message of Support

by Sri Chinmoy for the innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks

Sri Chinmoy offers the following prayerful message on September 15, 2001, in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11.

My Express Message to all my students all over the world:

At this juncture our only bounden Duty is to identify our prayerful hearts with the innocent, harmless and helpless victims and their beloved ones.

Our tearful eyes and the bleeding hearts of the relatives and friends have already touched the Compassion-Feet of our Absolute Lord Beloved Supreme. He is with His Infinity’s Compassion-Affection-Love-Sweetness-Fondness taking care of His supremely chosen children who have recently arrived at His Heaven-Home.

May America the Beautiful forever shine bright-brighter-brightest in the Heart of God the Creator and God the Creation.

Sri Chinmoy
