CONCERT HELD IN RUSSIA

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Sri Chinmoy offered a concert Sept. 19 in the Lensovet House of Culture here, which he dedicated the late Raisa Maximovna Gorbachev.

“She is the mother of all children, especially the helpless children who suffer from leukemia,” the spiritual teacher declared. “Her heart of infinite compassion accepted the same disease, and she left her body being fully identified with the helpless children’s suffering.”

Give Me No Freedom

Lyrics:

Give me no freedom,
Give me no freedom,
My Lord Supreme
If You really love me,
Then give me no freedom
Even for a fleeting moment.

Sri Chinmoy’s comment: “This is our philosophy. If you believe in this philosophy, you will make me happy. When we have too much freedom, we make mistakes.”

Published in Enthusiasm, Part 9

Notes:

Sri Chinmoy recites the words as a prayer at the Saturday morning 2-mile race in New York. At the end of the race, he teaches the song from his car. No recording is made on the day, and there seems to be no recording of Sri Chinmoy singing it at any other time.

Give Me No Freedom!

comments by Sri Chinmoy in Sanya, China, on 26 November 2004

When we pray to God, "Do not give me freedom", we are actually telling God, "I want to remain bound —- bound inside Your Heart or bound at Your Feet."

A few weeks ago, I composed a particular song in English. The words are:

   Give me no freedom!
   Give me no freedom!
   My Lord Supreme,
   If you really love me,
   Then give me no freedom,
   Even for a fleeting moment.

During our Christmas trip, I would like all of you to stand up and sing this song twice every morning. It will give me tremendous joy, because if we pray to God not to give us freedom, and if we sincerely mean it, then our progress is bound to be very, very, very fast.

When we pray to God for freedom, God says, “Take it.” Then immediately we enter into the jaws of a roaring lion. But when we pray to God, “Do not give me freedom”, we are actually telling God, “I want to remain bound — bound inside Your Heart or bound at Your Feet.”

If we are at the Feet of God or inside His Heart, then we can never misuse freedom. To be guided by God’s Will all the time is the greatest freedom. Freedom means joy. What else is freedom, if not the purest joy? This joy we can get only at the Feet of God or inside the Heart of God.

Seekers who want to run faster than the fastest approach God through devotion or through love. Seekers who choose the devotional aspect ask God to allow them to sit at His Feet. Seekers who choose the love aspect want to remain always inside the Heart of God. The others also love God, but their feeling is that God’s Feet give more protection than His Heart.

Outwardly, it may seem puzzling. If somebody is inside the Heart of God, is he not well-protected? Inside the Heart of God, we are safe, true, but there we may not be able to taste the Sweetness of God. That is why seekers who choose the devotional aspect always like to be in front of God. They get more joy by touching the Feet of God than by living inside the Heart of God. They feel that it is sweeter.

Sri Ramakrishna and some other spiritual Masters of the highest order used to say, “If I am inside You, then I become You. I do not want to become You; I want to taste You.”

Let us say the ocean of nectar is right in front of you. You can be inside the ocean and lose your identity. I always say that when a little drop enters into the ocean, it becomes the ocean itself. That is one way. The other way, the devotional aspect, is when a seeker says, “God, I do not want to become You; I want to enjoy You. Please stay right in front of me, and I will remain at Your Feet so that every day, at every moment, I can taste, I can devour, Your Sweetness, Compassion and Love.”

So those who take the side of devotion say, “I want to taste You at every moment. You are so sweet. I will be at Your Feet.” And those who take the side of love say, “I have suffered enough, enough, enough. Now I do not want to have my own personality. I want to be as vast as You are. I want to become what You are.”

We cannot say that one aspect is better than the other aspect. It is a matter of individual choice. At the last moment, God Himself says, “Either you can merge into the Nectar-Ocean, or you can enjoy it drop by drop. If you want to have Me totally, what I have and what I am, then take it. But if you get more joy by worshipping Me all the time, then you can be at My Feet.”

In the love aspect, the lover and the Beloved want to become one. In the devotion aspect, the seeker is like a slave, not an ordinary slave, but a divine slave. He wants to be at God’s Feet and worship Him all the time.

So these are two different approaches. It depends on the seekers, at the last moment, when they have realised God, to decide what they want to do. Both the love aspect and the devotion aspect have one source: wisdom. But the individual seeker or God-realised person at the last moment has to make the choice between them.

Some spiritual Masters in India wanted only devotion, devotion, devotion. Sri Ramakrishna is one of those and also Sri Chaitanya. Again, there are others such as Ramana Maharshi and a few more who have chosen the love aspect. So you have to choose. For you perhaps it will take a little time before you have to make the choice!

“Give me no freedom”

comments by Sri Chinmoy at Aspiration-Ground, Jamaica, New York, on 19 March 2005

If you really want to be an excellent seeker, then please sing our song “Give me no freedom” at least once a day. It will help your life tremendously, tremendously, tremendously. At least once a day, kindly sing the song, recite the song or think of the song. It will help you tremendously in your spiritual life.

By taking freedom, freedom, freedom from our Inner Pilot, we dig deep our inner grave. The moment He gives us freedom, we are apt to do something wrong, and that very thing will take us away from our own most sincere commitment to God’s Will.

Human Freedom and Divine Freedom

Excepts from a talk by Sri Chinmoy at the Sri Chinmoy Centre in Puerto Rico, on 18 October 2005

About a year ago I composed a song called, “Give Me No Freedom.”

That song I really want you to sing. You are holding meditations here twice a week. Wednesday is your most important day. “The Invocation” is, of course, compulsory for all my disciples to sing. Towards the end of your Centre meditation, please sing “Give Me No Freedom.” The message of this song is, “O Lord Supreme, do not give us freedom, do not give us freedom! If You give us freedom, then we shall feel that You do not care for us. But if You do not give us freedom, O Lord, then we shall know that You claim us to be Your own.” ...

In the song, “Give Me No Freedom,” we are saying to God, “If You give me freedom even for a fleeting moment, I will do the wrong thing.” Again, it is a matter of our choice. God’s Freedom we can choose as our own. When we enjoy our human freedom, like a mad elephant we go here and there, and we do not see any danger. We see a wall, and we feel that it is so beautiful. But when we dash against it, we break our head! The other freedom is to choose God’s Way. With this freedom we are always flying in the sky, swimming in the ocean of love, sweetness and delight. ...

Devotion

A talk by Sri Chinmoy
at the Aum Centre
3817 Fort Hamilton Parkway, Brooklyn

Devotion is the complete submission of the individual Will to the Will Divine. Devotion is adoration. Adoration is the spontaneous delight that springs from the heart. Who can be the object of our adoration? God. How can we adore Him? Through our self-surrender.

Man loves. He expects love in return. A devotee loves. But he loves human beings for the sake of his sweet Lord who abides in all. His love breathes in humility, spontaneous joy and selfless service.

Devotion is the feminine aspect of love. It is sweet, energising and complete. Sri Aurobindo says, "After I knew that God was a woman, I learned something from far-off about love; but it was only when I became a woman and served my Master and Paramour that I knew love utterly."

A devotee sees a circle which is God. He enters into it with his soul's cry. He then silently comes and stands at the centre of the circle and grows into a tree of ecstasy.

A child does not care to know what his mother is. He just wants his mother's constant presence of love before him. Similar is the devotee's feeling for his Lord. Many come forward to help him in his life's journey. But he cares not for their help. God's Grace is his sole help and refuge. The tortures of Hell are too weak to torment him while he is there with his Lord. His life in hell is a life of perfect bliss. His sufferings and tribulations in Heaven know no bounds if he is there without his Lord beside him.

Unlike others, a devotee sincerely feels that he has nothing else in his possession save his desire for God. His desire is his jewel. God's Grace is His jewel. In offering his jewel to God, the devotee binds God. In giving His jewel to His devotee, God liberates and fulfils him.

Devotion is a soul-stirring emotion. It dynamically permeates the entire consciousness of the devotee. Devotion is action. This action is always inspired by devotee's inner being.

Devotion brings in renunciation. True renunciation is never a life of isolation. Renunciation is an utter distaste for the animal life of the flesh. It is also a total absence of the ego. A life of true renunciation is a life that lives in the world but not from it.

Devotion is dedication. Dedication gives a devotee his self-fulfilment. Self-fulfilment is God's Infinitude.

Life

A talk by Sri Chinmoy
at the home of Mrs. Consuelo Pineiro (Shanti)
in Miami, Florida

Life has an inner door. Aspiration opens it. Desire closes it. Aspiration opens it from within. Desire closes it from without.

Life has an inner lamp. This inner lamp is called aspiration. And when we keep our aspiration burning, it will, without fail, transmit to God's entire creation its effulgent glow.

Life has an inner Voice. It is the Saviour of mankind. This Voice is the Light of the Supreme. Life is protection, life is perfection, life is fulfilment when we open to this Light of the Supreme.

Each day is the renewal of life. Each day is the rebirth of our inner assurance that each individual is the chosen instrument of the Supreme to reveal and fulfil the Infinite Divine here on earth.

The outgoing life finds nothing but trouble, torture, misery and frustration. The inflowing life discovers the Sea of peace and bliss.

How to start life's inner journey? With the simple idea, the spontaneous thought that God-realisation is your birthright. Where to start? Here. From within. When to start? Now. Before the birth of a second.

Life is love. Love is life. Life fulfils God through love. Love fulfils God in life.

To illumine our life we need pure thoughts. Each pure thought is more precious than all the diamonds of the world, for God's Breath abides only in man's pure thoughts.

Life is always at work. It is ever active, dynamic. It tries to help the soul to complete its yet unaccomplished task, the divine Mission. The soul needs life's help to unfold itself fully. Life needs the soul's help to fulfil itself both physically and spiritually.

Birth and death play. They play together. Their game is the game of harmony. And it is always played on the infinite breast of Life.

Life is a thick cloud to him who keeps on brooding. Brooding and despondency are the worst foes that kill life in all its divine inspiration and high ideal. No more brooding, no more despondency. Your life shall become the beauty of a rose, the song of the dawn, the dance of the twilight.

God is in life. But life must awaken to the light of His Presence, His Transcendent Feet.

My aspiration is my preparation

My aspiration is my preparation.
My dedication is my preparation.
My preparation is for my emptiness.
My preparation is for my fulness.
My emptiness is my readiness.
My fulness is my readiness.
My emptiness-readiness pleases
God the Compassion-Giver.
My fulness-readiness pleases
God the Perfection-Proclaimer.

I love my Beloved Supreme

I love my body.
Therefore, I am patrolling its boundaries
Carefully.

I love my vital.
Therefore, I am controlling its aggressions
Forcefully.

I love my mind.
Therefore, I am challenging its doubts
Dauntlessly.

I love my heart.
Therefore, I am changing its needs
Wisely.

I love my soul.
Therefore, I am flying with it
Devotedly.

I love my Beloved Supreme.
Therefore, I am crying for Him
Sleeplessly, unreservedly
And unconditionally.

My inferiority

Inferiority, my inferiority!
Do you not realise
That you are hurting
My beautiful eyes?
How can I forgive you
And why should I?

Inferiority, my inferiority!
Do you not realise
That you are killing
My soulful heart?
How can I forgive you
And why should I?

Inferiority, my inferiority!
Do you not realise
That you are disappointing
My hopeful soul?
How can I forgive you
And why should I?

Inferiority, my inferiority!
Do you not realise
That you are deserting
My blessingful Supreme?
How can I forgive you
And why should I?
