Animesh: Does each seeker have a special role to play, for example in the kind of vocation they choose, or is it sufficient just to work, no matter what kind of job it is?

Sri Chinmoy: No. It is a complicated question. In some cases, you know, if a seeker has specific qualities, specialised in something, then he has to or it is advisable for him to manifest, if he is a seeker, the Supreme by following, by carrying, that particular career in life. You understand? If somebody has studied electricity for a long time and he has become an electrician – now, if he has become a good electrician and if he becomes a seeker, then it is easier for him to manifest the Supreme through his capacity, which he has acquired over the years.

Now, again, if somebody is not specialised in anything but is a good soul, then in his case it is not necessary to learn something after becoming a good seeker, to learn anything specific so that he can manifest the Supreme in a more special way, no. For him, whatever the Supreme wants, you understand? He does not have to become a doctor or lawyer or electrician — no, no, no — only whatever. He is in no way inferior to the one who is specialised in something.

One has got some capacity in a particular field. God says, "Then, all right, then do it. Take it as a means for your further development."

One does not have any specific capacity, but God says, "All right, then I am giving you something else to do. Something — do it."

Most important thing is how devotedly you do your job as a doctor or lawyer or electrician or as a simple worker. Devoted service is of paramount importance. If somebody is holding the lowest rank in a big office and doing his duty soulfully, in God's Eye he is infinitely superior to the one who is holding the highest position.

So, now, there is another point. If the Will of the Supreme is to give additional confidence to the seeker by making him in the outer world, say, a celebrity, or by making him into a man of high, noble position so that he will have his confidence more in life, Supreme does it. He is not making progress through conscious surrender. Then Supreme says, "Then be something first. From the desire-world, living in the desire-world, become something and then enter into the aspiration-world."

Vivekananda used to say, "Go and play football. You will understand the Bhagavad Gita better if you play football." And he used to say "Go and tell lies" to someone because he won't budge an inch. He said, "I will be responsible. You are such a lazy person. For you, it will be better to go and tell lies and the world will kick you and you will get up from your sleep."

So, then again, people in the name of peace or poise — which is all false — will not move, they have no life-energy. So, Vivekananda used to say, "Go and play football. If you play football, you will have some life-energy. Then you will be able to understand the message of the Gita."

So, there are some seekers — unfortunately, I have — I tell them, "Do something, become something, make yourself think that you are a human being. You are not just a grain of sand or a speck of dust, no. You *are* something. First, prove to yourself on the human level that you are something. Then transcend the human level, go to the divine level. If in the human level, staying in the human level, you feel that you have nothing to accomplish, nothing to long for, and what you have or what you are is more than enough for you, then you are totally mistaken."

Many fool themselves by saying that they don't need anything. No, they do have intense eagerness, in a sense greed, to become famous like somebody else, but they do not have the eagerness or willingness to work for it. At that time, if they have the eagerness, then Supreme says, "Then follow. Then offer yourself. Do something, become something."

But if they feel that "No, we do not have the eagerness to do something or to become something, right from the beginning, only make of us what You want us to be," then they do not go through the desire-life. They start right away from the aspiration-life. So, it depends on the individual.

Now, to come to you personally. In your case, you do not have to be specialised in anything. Any job that satisfies you. You do not have to become something great in terms of work, let us say office work or anything. Anything that can defray your earthly expenses is what the Supreme in you needs from you. Just it is only to live on earth, you need money-power. That money-power is only to keep you one with the spiritual power so that you can come here, you can run your Centre. But not by becoming some big shot in the outer life that you will please the Supreme. Only do something that will support you in your outer life. That is what the Supreme wants. And then, with your intense aspiration you have started. This intense aspiration you continue, continue, to realise the Supreme, to manifest the Supreme through your dedication. All by yourself, you are working so hard.

You are in Brisbane? You did not try in Canberra? All right, Brisbane. Very good. So, you don't have to worry about it. Only do something just to support yourself. That is what the Supreme wants. Do well; you are doing well. Very pleased with you, very proud of you. So, sincerity keep, simplicity keep, humility maintain. Your name is 'Animesh' — sleepless. Your aim is sleeplessly to aspire and to devote yourself. That is the sole meaning of your life. So, sleeplessly dedicate yourself to the Supreme and, in order to keep the body and the soul together, to support yourself, you will work — work, work here, work there, just for the sake of your earthly existence. Main goal is to become a supremely chosen instrument of the Supreme, for the Supreme.

People who are always worrying about the future – what will happen, what will happen – are not meant for the spiritual life. The present moment is a heavy enough load for you to carry. As soon as you put it on your shoulders, you are already collapsing. When you worry about what will happen in the future if you do not have money, on the strength of your imagination-power you are only increasing the weight that you have to carry now. You think about what will happen in five years, in ten years, in twenty years. Three hundred and sixty-five days are multiplied by all your worries or fantasies. You can add bricks to the load or you can add beautiful, golden statues, but whether you add worries or fantasies, still the load you have to carry today becomes heavier.

Instead of making your load heavier, just go to God and give Him what you have, which is your heart’s cry. Then He will give you what He has and what He is for you: His Smile. Your heart’s inner cry and God’s Satisfaction-Smile must go together. Then only will you be happy. Otherwise, all the fantasies about the future that you are cherishing, all the castles in the air that you are building, will never make you happy. The present is enough to deal with. If you start worrying about your finances and other things in the future, you shall only ruin whatever little spiritual aspiration you already have.

Your prayer should not be for money but for God: “I am alive today only because of my heart’s cry for You. Today You have given me the opportunity to pray to You and to love You. I am so grateful. If it is Your Will, tomorrow You will give me again the same aspiration and love for You, and my spiritual life shall remain alive tomorrow.”

To continue some inspiring stories about Sri Chinmoy's pioneering events of the 70's, I wish to tell a personal experience from July 13, 1977. During that month Sri Chinmoy was creating and offering extremely inspiring and elevating talks which were mostly extemporaneous, called 'Everest-Aspiration', as many of you well know.

There were six talks given the evening of July 13, 1977 at Yoga-Life Perfection, an enterprise where I worked as a yoga teacher.

It was a hot summer night and the studio was a large loft on the second floor of a big building on the East Side around 35th St. There were only about 30 people invited which made the room full enough for an intimate function which included some plays and songs. But the crowning event was Sri Chinmoy reading the latest Everest-Aspiration talks that he had just created during the day and on his way to Manhattan.

It was around 9:30 p.m. when Sri Chinmoy started soulfully reading out the talks. In the past he had many times extemporaneously created them as he recited them in a very high trance-like consciousness. He seemed to enjoy reading them that night while still maintaining a very high state of consciousness. We were all very inspired and excited because some of them were about Yoga, Perfection and Intuition.

I also noticed something a bit peculiar. Sri Chinmoy had a battery powered portable flashlight with a little fan on the other end of it which I never had seen him with before. For some reason I noticed that he had it with him the whole time since he had walked into the studio. During one of the talks, around 9:40 or so, the lights all of a sudden went out along with the air conditioner which was on as there were no open windows to speak of. Immediately Sri Chinmoy turned on his trusty little flashlight and fan almost as if he had known there would be a power failure. He just kept on reading his talks, unfazed by the sudden event which turned out to be the biggest blackout in New York history. Some of the guys scrambled to see if the breakers had tripped in the building and I went to open a window for some air. When I looked out the window, I noticed that there were no lights anywhere in New York City. Realizing that we would not get any lights or air conditioner back, some of the boys starting fanning our Teacher with prasad trays. I think Adhiratha was doing it with me, if he can recall it.

I was both amused and worried that Sri Chinmoy would be too hot or uncomfortable to finish the talks. But he did finish with the incredible "If You Have, Then Come To Me" talk. When you read that poem or talk, just try to visualise Sri Chinmoy seated in a hot, dark second floor loft in the middle of Manhattan at the start of a very serious blackout sitting with his trusty penlight-fan and being cooled by plastic food trays while still maintaining an incredibly high and soulful consciousness as he was creating another Immortal Everest-Aspiration gem.

Soon after the last talk and a short meditation, some of his students escorted him down the stairwell with flashlights as the elevator was not working either. I believe that most of the students from Jamaica, Queens had come in a yellow school bus they used back then. I stayed in Manhattan since the subways were not operating and I had to go to work the next day close by.

Walking to work from a friend's apartment in Manhattan was an eerie but peaceful feeling. There were no traffic lights, so traffic was quite slow and was being directed by police and volunteers. Everywhere there seemed to be a feeling of oneness, of sharing a common serious problem which required people cooperating with a sense of oneness.

Of course there were exceptions to this golden rule, but in general it seemed as if a great Spiritual Master had left an impression on the City that night with his soul stirring talks about oneness, perfection and intuition, which he so clearly demonstrated with his own actions and words.

One more thing which most people may not know. Notice the dates of the talks which started on July 1 and ended on July 20th. Sri Chinmoy's wish was to give 100 talks and, I believe, 100 esraj concerts in the month of July, a seemingly impossible task. But the impossible once again surrendered to this Great Master as it only took twenty days, and not the whole 31 days of July, to give the talks.

On 22 July 1966, Sri Chinmoy inaugurated the first AUM Centre — later known as the Sri Chinmoy Centre — in Miramar, Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. This was an important milestone in his mission in the West, and was reached just over two years after arriving in NY, US on April 13th, 1964.

At the time, Sri Chinmoy was still working in the Indian Consulate, but had been invited by a seeker, Sudha, to visit Puerto Rico. During his first visit to the island, Sri Chinmoy gave a talk, entitled ‘My Puerto Rico’, under the auspices of the YMCA of Santurce, Puerto Rico. A few days later, the first AUM centre was inaugurated.

The Beginning of the Puerto Rican Centre

"Our Sudha went to Swami Vishnudevananda’s Centre in Montreal. There she became friends with Gariyasi. After some time, they did not continue there. One day Gariyasi said to Sudha, “My sister is in an Ashram in India. Soon a great Yogi from there will be coming to New York.” Then Sudha made enquiries and found out when I would be arriving in New York.

I started working at the Indian Consulate. One day, out of the blue, Sudha called me. I did not know who she was. She said, “I know you are a great Yogi! Marcia [Gariyasi] has told me all about you. Will you come to Puerto Rico? I would like to have a Centre here.”

We started our AUM Magazine. We sent it to Sudha and she read it eagerly. Then I accepted her invitation and went to Puerto Rico. That is how our Centre started. From where to where! At Swami Vishnudevananda’s Centre, Sudha found out about me. Then she became our first and foremost disciple in Puerto Rico."

The AUM Centre was legally incorporated on 12 August 1966. Over the next few years, Sri Chinmoy would frequently visit the island and the centres would play an important role in his manifestation, including the publishing of his books. For his 35th birthday on 27 August, Sri Chinmoy sent this message to the Puerto Rico centre.

To my dear students in Puerto Rico

O Children of the Supreme! I bow to the Supreme within you.

Today my body completes thirty-five years of its earthly existence. You are entering into me with your hearts' joy and your souls' aspiration. I am placing your divine wealth at the Feet of the Supreme. I am also offering to the Supreme all that you have and all that you are.

A song without notes is no song. A song breathes because it has a Singer. The Singer is the Supreme.

A tree without branches is no tree. A tree lives because it has a Root. The Root is the Supreme.

O Flames of my Spirit's fire, Fly into the Transcendental Beyond.

The Puerto Ricans' love for me

"Puerto Rico: the land of sun and sea. If I write a book on Puerto Rico, it will be at least three hundred pages, if not more. I have so many stories! Many funny things happened with my Puerto Rican disciples.

Again, serious things also happened in Puerto Rico. So many songs I composed in Puerto Rico. Super-super-excellent experiences I had in Puerto Rico. And in terms of love and affection for me, nobody can come near the Puerto Ricans. Such pure love, pure affection they have offered me. Their affection and their love for me cannot be equaled by others. They are very kind, very affectionate, very devoted. Again, they do not believe in time! My Puerto Rican disciples live in eternal time.

I love my Puerto Rico. Long before anybody cared for me, my Puerto Rico accepted me and cared for me. I wrote a song with those words."

Puerto Rico Manifestation

“Puerto Rico honours us. This is something true. But something infinitely more significant than this is that Puerto Rico gives us the opportunity to be of service to the Supreme. Puerto Rico accepts us with whatever we have. Whatever we want to offer Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico accepts gladly and soulfully. 

“Puerto Rico has accepted our philosophy unreservedly and wholeheartedly. All of Puerto Rico, its leaders and people, know who we are and accept us. This is very significant."

On 27 January 1976, Sri Chinmoy had a most soulful two-and-a-half hour conversation with the world's greatest boxer, Muhammad Ali, in the champion's hotel room in Puerto Rico. The transcript can be viewed at Muhammad Ali and Sri Chinmoy meditate.

Opening Meditation

The Council for the Parliament officially asked Sri Chinmoy to lead the opening of this momentous event in silence as a “perfect entry for participants into the Parliament experience,” adding, “We can think of no one better to do it than you.”

Sri Chinmoy said about his opening meditation, “During my opening meditation I am praying for the oneness of all religions.”

"While I was in Barcelona, I wrote thirty-five prayers, composed twenty-eight songs in English and Bengali, and drew a number of birds to symbolise the aspiration of the human soul. The Parliament of World Religions

1893 Chicago. The Parliament of the World’s Religions was held for the first time as part of the Columbian Exhibition. This historic gathering is regarded as the beginning of the interfaith movement worldwide. One of the most inspiring and magnetic speakers was Swami Vivekananda, a young Hindu monk from India.

1993 Chicago

To celebrate the centenary of the first Parliament, eight thousand people from various faiths came together in Chicago for a second Parliament. Sri Chinmoy was chosen by the organisers to open the convocation with a few moments of silent meditation.

Interestingly, Sri Chinmoy was a great admirer of Swami Vivekananda and in 1993, answered a question about his significance to the Parliament of Religions.

"I strongly feel that today’s centenary [1993] of the Parliament of Religions is taking place precisely because of Vivekananda. He was the dreamer, the lover and the possessor of a truly universal spirit. People came to the original Parliament of Religions from various religions and various cultures. In most cases they came to preach or speak about their respective religious beliefs. But Vivekananda came as a lover of humanity to sing the song of a oneness-world-home. He did not come here to propagate the views of his Hindu religion. He came to propagate the one religion that is known as Man. He spoke of the individual man who is evolving into the universal man and consciously accepting the world as his own, very own. Vivekananda was at once an ancient silence-heart and a modern dynamism-life."

The Fourth of July

The American Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th 1776. Sri Chinmoy often observed this momentous date in American history, remarking that it was a most significant document, not just in American, but also in global history.

“The American Declaration of Independence had the pioneer vision of faith, dignity and humanity’s basic needs: equal rights, justice and freedom.”

Speaking at the start of the Liberty Torch relay run on 9 January 1976 to honour the nation's Bicentennial, Sri Chinmoy offered this message:

"O divine runners, you are the harbingers of America’s new dawn, America’s new promise, America’s new conviction and America’s new assurance to the world body. Two hundred years ago America received, nay achieved, independence from human bondage. This was not only the freedom of American consciousness but the freedom of all human consciousness to strive for a higher life, a more illumining soul and a more fulfilling goal."

America is My Dreamland

"America is my dreamland. It will always remain my dreamland – America, as such, the country, the soul, the heart, but not necessarily the mind. America will forever remain my dreamland. I had the highest hope, and still I maintain the highest hope, all in the inner world. The outer world is frustration. The inner world is the highest hope. When I came to America, a new country, I came with such high hopes, and I shall still maintain my love for America, admiration for America, adoration for America. At that time I hoped for many divine things to be manifested in the outer world. They have not yet been manifested, but the vision that we have in the inner world, that I shall never give up, never.

One man, Thomas Jefferson, showed the light not only to the country, but to the whole world. His vision touched the very length and breadth of the world. It started manifesting here, there, everywhere. Jefferson’s vision, for about 200 years, blossomed in many countries, not only in America. We sow the seeds here; somehow the same seeds go to some other places, far, very far. They enter into Mother Earth and germinate. There are quite a few countries that may be unaware that this vision came from Jefferson."

Fourth of July Meditation 1976

On America's Bicentennial anniversary, Sri Chinmoy offered a 13-hour meditation for the Soul of America in Central Park, New York, US.

The meditation began at midnight on July 4th and ended late in the afternoon. It is the first overnight event the New York Police Department had ever permitted in Central Park.

 

“The term “united” has always had a special appeal to all human souls, and this transcendent idea has remained in vogue down the sweep of centuries. There was a time when America was under the repressive yoke of Great Britain. Then America fought dauntlessly and sleeplessly for its rightful independence. At first, the newly liberated Americans and their beautiful, vast land were sadly wanting in oneness. But there came a time when a new dawn of oneness-glory broke upon the glowing and illumining horizon. Americans felt the supreme necessity of a “united” country, and the thirteen colonies gradually, steadily, unerringly and selflessly became unified. Similarly, although at the present time peace is not reigning supreme in the United Nations, there shall definitely come a time when peace-flood will inundate the 'united' nations around the globe.”

American Patriots

“There have been many American patriots in the past and there will be many more. The Supreme had a special vision for the soul of America and He revealed it first through the Founding Fathers. The Founding Fathers were definitely spiritually illumined. Of course, their illumination may not have been the illumination of a great Yogi, but they did have great inner awakening and inner illumination. 

The light always has to be embodied by great noble individuals. To start with, you have Thomas Jefferson's vision: the Declaration of Independence. But it is not Jefferson's vision alone. Many people saw the reality. It was the vision of that era, the vision of all who surrounded Jefferson. You can call it the vision of Washington, Adams, Franklin, Paine and others. Again, the sense of sacrifice of all those who fought for this country in those days — no matter how little or how much — deserves our special attention.”

Liberty Torch Relay

The Liberty Torch Relay was a relay run in honour of America's bicentennial in 1976. It was the inspiration of Sri Chinmoy who wanted to honour the 200 year anniversary of America's Independence.

On April 13th 2007, Sri Chinmoy lifted 50 roses to symbolically honour the 50 states of the US.
