ALBANIAN PRESIDENT GETS U THANT AWARD

 

JAMAICA, NY — Albanian President Alfred Moisiu came to Aspiration-Ground Sept. 22 to be lifted by Sri Chinmoy and receive the U Thant Peace Award from him.

Albania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and the country’s UN Ambassador also attended the event.

President Moisiu told Sri Chinmoy, “I deeply appreciate your work and your deeds to sow the seed of peace and understanding among peoples.”

Sri Chinmoy completes his 5,000th lift in his ‘Lifting Up the World with a Oneness-Heart’ programme when he raises Vladimir Petrovsky, former Deputy Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union. The lift takes place in the back garden tent of Annam Brahma restaurant in Jamaica, NY, USA. Songs by Sri Chinmoy, composed in honour of Vladimir Petrovsky, are performed by an acapella, all-male choir.

Sri Chinmoy is welcomed back to Puerto Rico by Governor Luis Ferré where the first Sri Chinmoy spiritual Centre was established in San Juan in 1966.

Sri Chinmoy competes in the Sri Chinmoy Cup — a special event organised by current Olympic decathlon champion, Robert Zmelik, in honor of Sri Chinmoy’s visit to Prague —held at Slavia Praha Sports Stadium in Prague, Czech Republic. His results in the field events are — 8.38 metres for the 4 kilogram shot put; 21.04 metres for the 1 kilogram discus; and 23.58 metres for the 600 gram javelin. He records a time of 16.60 seconds for the 100-metre race, which he runs with current Olympic decathlon champion Robert Zmelik. Emil Zatopek is the official starter for this special event.

Sri Chinmoy composes the song ‘O Pablo Casals’ in honour of Don Pablo’s birth centenary (29 December 1876). The song is later sung on 11 October 1976, during a programme at the United Nations which Sri Chinmoy holds in memory of the maestro.

Sri Chinmoy is asked a question about solving the world’s problems by Mr Le Kim Dinh, United Nations Correspondent for The New York Times, at a meeting of the meditation group at the United Nations in New York.

Sri Chinmoy is named ‘Honorary Visiting Scholar’ at the Pacific School of Religion, University of California, in Berkeley, CA, USA. Written acknowledgment also came from Andrew Neil Goldenkranz of the ASSU Council of Presidents and from Edward E. Golbry of the Department of Music Stanford University.

Sri Chinmoy delivers his maiden speech in the United States, a lecture entitled ‘Hinduism’, to the tenth-grade students of Hicksville High School in Hicksville, NY, USA. Krishan Dhanda, a friend of Mr. Ramamoorthy who worked with Sri Chinmoy at the India Consulate in New York at the time, made the arrangements for the lecture.
