Sri Chinmoy then lifted his own body-weight and was interviewed on Fairfield Exchange, a Norwalk-based television show. Next came an organ recital at Woolsey Hall at Yale University in New Haven, followed by an interview with the New Haven Register. Of all the gurus who had been popular during the 1960s and ’70s, Sri Chinmoy was the only one to be interviewed on the programme.

Also, a selection of Sri Chinmoy’s artworks was exhibited in the building.

Sri Chinmoy received the Award of Excellence from the UN Society of Writers (the society’s highest award) for the completion of his 900th book, Love, Compassion, Forgiveness, which he had dedicated to President Gorbachev. Sri Chinmoy then read two of his poems – his very first poem in English, ‘The Golden Flute’ written c. 1952-53, and a poem he had written just a few hours prior to the award ceremony held at the United Nations in New York. Sri Chinmoy concluded with a note of gratitude to his hosts and a short talk, entitled ‘American Freedom In My Poetry’.

An exhibition of Sri Chinmoy’s Jharna-Kala paintings opened at a gallery at 154 Wooster Street in Soho, New York, NY, USA.

Sri Chinmoy opened an evening concert of classical Indian music with two Bengali songs and a short meditation at the United Nations in New York. The programme, which was sponsored by The United Nations Meditation Group as a fund-raising effort for UNICEF, included recitals by classical singer Jyoti Pandit and sarod player Vasant Rai.
